Who Lost Space?
By
Paul M. Weyrich
We are in
the midst of a new space race. This race, unlike the last, is
one that usually is ignored – or derided – by the news media.
Unlike the last, this one is deadly serious. It involves much
higher stakes than putting a man on the moon. We can only pray
that our politicians and the public will summon the will to
prevail. Losing it would bring severe consequences.
THE
WASHINGTON TIMES reported recently, “China and Russia are
developing space weapons and are among several nations working
on systems to threaten U.S. satellites with lasers or
missiles.” This story by TIMES reporter Bill Gertz was based
upon testimony offered on January 11, 2007 by Army Lieutenant
General Michael D. Maples, Director, Defense Intelligence
Agency, before a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
hearing on “Current and Projected National Security Threats to
the United States.”

As the November election returns rolled in, giving
Democrats control of both the House and Senate for the first
time in more than a decade, liberals in both bodies moved
their iconic fight to halt “global warming” to the top of

All of a sudden the
“fusionist conservatism” of libertarian means and
traditionalist ends that created the modern conservative
movement is in the news, and under fire. Ryan Sager has
written a book—The Elephant in the Room--on how the
traditionalists have pushed aside the libertarians, selling
out freedom by legislating traditional ends. As a result,
CATOs Brink Lindsey went so far as to demand a “new fusionism”
between his libertarians and liberal progressives as a better
bargain for those who favor liberty...

Has the United
States ever engaged in a crusade against Islam? No, never.
And, what's more, one of the country's earliest diplomatic
documents rejects this very idea.
Exactly 210 years ago, toward the end of George Washington's
second presidential administration, a document was signed with
the first of two Barbary Pirate states. Awkwardly titled the "Treaty
of Peace and Friendship, signed at Tripoli November 4, 1796 (3
Ramada I, A. H. 1211), and at Algiers January 3, 1797 (4
Rajab, A. H. 1211),"
it contains an extraordinary statement....

Mental health
screening of all children is the goal of legislation
introduced into many state legislatures this year. Typical of
these highly controversial bills is the
Missouri bill
that would require every Missouri school
district, in collaboration with "the office of comprehensive
child mental health," to develop "a policy of incorporating
social and emotional development into the district's
educational program."read entire article here

The
Tax Foundation came to town this week, telling Georgia
businesspeople little they don’t already know and
policy-makers lots they need to get done.
Georgia’s state and local tax burden – the percentage of
personal income taken by the government in the form of taxes
at all levels – has increased substantially since 1970, the
Washington-based policy group told a crowd of more than 100 at
a Georgia Public Policy Foundation Policy Briefing Luncheon...read entire
